ROBERT HAY, 1938 – 2022

ROBERT LAWRIE HAY Well respected surgeon, international athlete, golfer and musician, b. 19 November 1938; passed away on 30 March 2022 at the age of 83.

An Edinburgh man, he competed in athletics for Edinburgh University, Heriot’s F.P. AC and Octavians AC

Bob, to his multitude of friends, represented Scotland in 5 international athletic matches. His principal event being the 440yards hurdles and in that event he reigned as Scottish champion from 1959 to 1963.

He also won championship medals at the 440 yards flat and the Decathlon

A founder member of the Octavians A.C., Bob first came to prominence running in the flat 440 yards at the 1958 Scottish championships, where he took the bronze medal. From 1960 until 1963 he led the Scottish rankings and in 1962 achieved a personal best time of 54.5secs.

Bob was a member of the Scottish athletics team at the 1958 Empire & Commonwealth Games in Cardiff.
